Brigham and Mary Ann Young home
view of home and surrounding area
Before building in Nauvoo, the Young’s lived across the Mississippi River in Montrose, Iowa. But then Mary Ann moved her family into a small log cabin on this site while Brigham was on a mission. When he returned, he built this home.
Master Bedroom
The master bedroom occupies the single-story section on the west (right) side of the home.
Kitchen
Workers restoring the home in the 1970s knew this was the kitchen but wondered why it contained no fireplace. Learn how the mystery was solved.
Council room
Brigham Young used this room to meet with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, new converts, returning missionaries, and civil authorities.
Child's Bedroom
The window in this bedroom, at the top of the stairs, looks north over Granger Street.
Bedroom
This large second-floor room may have been the master bedroom before Brigham built the one-story addition on the west side.
Backyard
Here you see Brigham’s above-ground root cellar. Neighboring homes are in the distance. In the 1840s, the city would have been filled with homes as Nauvoo grew to be the second largest city in Illinois.
