During the winter of 1845–1846 when the Saints were preparing to emigrate west, this shop was a beehive of activity.

A blacksmith shop played a crucial role in any frontier town. An experienced blacksmith made and repaired household tools and farm equipment. He also made shoes for horses and oxen.
